TRADIONAL MEMORIAL DAY MAY 30, 2009

Memorial Day originated in 1868, when Union General John A. Logan designated a day in which the graves of Civil War soldiers would be decorated.
Known as Decoration Day, the holiday was changed to Memorial Day within twenty years, becoming a holiday dedicated to the memory of all war dead. It became a federal holiday in 1971, and is now observed on the last Monday in May.
I know I posted a salute to your honored war dead on May 25th the day most people observe
Memorial Day. To me growing up we always celebrated and decorated the graves on May 30th,
I remember my mother gathering the flowers she had in her flower garden, roses, snowballs, lilacs and other flowers she had and walking to the cemetery and placing large bouquets on the graves. To this day I still consider Memorial Day to be May 30th.
Another memory that comes to mind on this day is the selling of red poppies. My dad who fought
in World War I always bought one and wore it on that day. Do any of you remember this
tradition?
A big thank you to all the men and women who serve to keep this great country safe!!!

MEMORIAL DAY OBSERVED - MAY 25, 2009

Eulogy for a Veteran
~Author Unkown~
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the mornings hush,
I am the swift upliftings rush of quite
birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die.

RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY

We have been having alot of rain lately. The
picture above and the ones below show what
happens when you get a heavy downpour of
1/2 inch or more at one time. A construction
project (now defunct) had a retaining pond
built to hold back rain water, but as you can see
it does not work very well. Our back yard is
a raging river.

This shows the water covering the street.

Another view of the back yard.

Water pouring across the street. This was taken
after the rain had stopped. Since the company
that had the construction project went bankrupt,
there is nothing that can be done about this problem.
We can only pray we do not get to many of these
heavy downpours.

PEONY BUSH

I only have one peony bush that my son and
daughter-in-law gave me a few years back on
mothers day. The first year or two I was wondering
if it was ever going to bloom. This year it had the
must blooms ever. This picture with just a few
buds showing.

This picture has 8 buds and one in full bloom.
I swear that some of blooms were as big as
saucers.

ONE NATION UNDER GOD

One Nation Under God

One nation under God we live
Think about all some had to give.

We the people share freedom's life
In a world of ever present strife.

Be grateful to those who keep this true
Warriors of our red, white, and blue.

They're trained by those of great skill
Honed to perform, so strong their will.

They show what love is all about
They'll fight for us, there is no doubt.

Defending bravely what we are
No holding back each heartfelt star.

Highly praise these men and women
Giving thanks time and again.

Those in uniform will always be
The golden pride of this country.

GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER

I know I have the fattest
squirrels in the neighborhood.
I took this picture the other
day two squirrels eating and
the other waiting his turn. I
really cannot get angry at
them, I will have to just change
the type bird feeders I use.

ARMED FORCES DAY

Take a moment to thank a Veteran

When you see someone in a uniform
Someone who serves us all, doing military
duty, answering their country's call
take a moment to thank them for protecting
what you hold dear, tell them you are proud
of them; make it very clear. Just tap them on
the shoulder, give a smile, and say, "Thanks
for what you're doing; to keep us safe in the USA!"

LUNA MOTH

This luna moth was on the side of my storage
building one morning when I went out to
get the bird seed to fill by bird feeders. Just
another one of God's creations that is amazing.

MY FIRST HOLY COMMUNION

On May 27, 1945 I received my First Holy Communion,
that was 64 years ago. The items pictures above
are the mementoes given to us on that day. The case
was white at one time but is now yellowed with age. The
pray book is worn with age. The girls got white rosaries
and the boys got black rosaries. There was also 2
pictures: one of our Lady of MtCarmel and the other of
St. Simon Stock. Click on the picture to enlarge.

VISIT TO BOTANICAL AND JAPANESE GARDENS

Yesterday was a nice day here in Pinson, Alabama.
My husband wanted to do something besides stay
home and work in the yard so he suggested going
to Sears to see what all they had on sale since they
are closing their store. After looking around and
not finding anything we needed my husband started
to just drive and we ended up at the Birmingham
Botanical Gardens and the Japanese Gardens. I
just wish I had worn my walking shoes, sandals
just do not go well with gravel paths. I also
wish I had my camera with me. I have just got to
learn to carry it with me every time I leave the
house. Needless to say there are no pictures to
post. We did enjoy the gardens glad we went
yesterday because it is raining here again today.
Hope wherever you are it's a nice day.

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

M O T H E R

"M" is for the million things she gave me,
"O" means only that she's growing old,
"T" is for the tears she shed to save me,
"H" is for her heart of purest gold;
"E" is for her eyes, with love-light shining,
"R" means right, and right she'll always be,
Put them all together, they spell "MOTHER"
A word that means the world to me.
~Howard Johnson~

AND GRANDMAS TOO....

While we honor all our mothers with words of love
and praise. While we tell about their goodness and
their kind and loving ways. We should also think
of Grandma, she's a mother too, you see...for she
mothered my dear mother as my mother mothers me.
~Author Unknown~

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO EVERYONE WHO IS
A MOTHER, STEP MOTHER, GRANDMOTHER OR
STEP GRANDMOTHER

CAPE COD DECANTER AND GLASSES

More finds at the yard sales. The Avon Cape
Cod decanter and glasses I got at a good price
not going to tell what I paid for the set just in
case I ever decide to sell it. The table was a
steal $5.00 It does have a bad spot on top but
the doily ( another yard sale find) covers it up
just fine.

MAY

"May! Queen of blossoms, and fulfilling
flowers, with what pretty muse shall we
charm the hours? Wilt thou have a pipe
and reed, blown in the open mead? Or
to the lute give need in the green bowers?"
~Lord Edward Thurlow~
